Bad Accident Cast Iron Bank
By J. & E. Stevens Company. Cromwell, Ct. - Circa 1888. A farmer is seen driving his mule-drawn cart to market. Foolishly, he eats a slice of watermelon, instead of keeping his eye on the country road in front of him. Suddenly, from behind a clump of foliage, a small boy emerges. This has the action of frightening the mule, who in turn rears upwards, toppling the cart and causing a "bad accident". The implicit racism of the Bad Accident bank suggests that the black farmer is not able to safely complete even his simple task as a mule driver.
