Rare Japanned Oxen Dray Iron Toy
Made by Ives, Blakeslee & Company. Bridgeport, Ct. - 1890 - 13 1/2" Long. From the Frank Kidd Toy Collection. Fifty years ago, in his landmark treatise The Toy Collector, Louis Hertz loudly declared that the Ives Toy Company reigned supreme, without any near rival, in the arena of cast iron toy production. The toy designers at Ives were so preeminent in their skills, that they were even able to breathe commercial viability into a line of toys with purely a Japanned finish. This is a sublime example of such work.
