Buster Brown and Tige Scarce Comics Bell Ringer
Made by Gong Bell Mfg. Company. East Hampton, Ct. - 1910 - 8 1/4" Long. From the Collection of Gertrude Hegarty. Buster Brown and his dog Tige were well known to the American public in the early 20th century. From its very outset in 1902, Richard Outcault's comic strip about a young boy and his dog entranced children. Many different toys were produced that celebrated their likeness. This particular toy appears to hybridize elements from two different East Hampton based bell toy makers. The overall design and the cast iron frame is clearly the work of the toy makers at Gong Bell, while the figure of Tige and the shiny sheet steel wheels are certainly the contribution of Watrous Bell Company. At one time, this beautiful prized bell toy was part of the collection of a Gertrude Hegarty.
