Charleston-born Solomon Nunes Carvalho is well known as a painter and a traveler. His scientific work is also of notice, especially in the area of steam engineering appliances. Carvalhho’s “new system of superheating steam, and producing the rapid transfer of heat at high temperatures by hot water circulation under pressure” was issued a patent in 1877.
