HOLOCAUST PRISONER RELICS BUCHENWALD & AUSCHWITZ (3)
Lot of three prisoner relics from the Holocaust, including a Polish concentration camp red triangle with a black capital letter 'P', removed from uniform, most likely from Auschwitz. Frayed at the edges. The system of classifying prisoners through the use of triangles (Winkel) originated before the war in the concentration camps in Germany. They were implemented with certain modifications, but were not used at all for some groups of prisoners. Red triangles marked 'political prisoners' (Schutzhaeftlinge), in other words, those who were imprisoned on the basis of a 'protective custody order' (Schutzhaftbefehl) issued by a state police post. WITH: A cloth badge from the Buchenwald concentration camp made of white cloth stitched to a piece of red fabric stamped 'Buchenwal[d]' from a concentration camp uniform identifying the wearer as a prison inmate of the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar, Germany. Ca. 2 x 3.75 inches, frayed at the edges and missing the last letter. Two pieces. WITH: Concentration camp package receipt.. A mailing receipt for a package sent to a prisoner at the Mauthausen subcamp Gusen. The receipt identifies the sender as Johann Atilz from Krenau (Chrzanow), Poland, and the recipient of the package as Polish protective prisoner Zbigniew Kozlowski, inmate number 47669, born 28.5.1911 imprisoned at the concentration camp Gusen, a subcamp of Mauthausen Concentration camp in Austria, Block 12, barrack room B. The receipt is 4 x 5.75 inches, and marked 'NS-Dr[uck] Brs[lau] 10.42.'
