US WWII JAPANESE INTERNMENT ORDER
Rare WWII public announcement broadside, 14 x 22 inches, issued by the Western Defense Command and Fourth Army Wartime Civil Control Administration, Presidio of San Franciso, California. About 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, most of whom lived on the Pacific Coast, were forcibly relocated and incarcerated in concentration camps in the western interior of the country. Approximately two-thirds of the internees were United States citizens. These actions were ordered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
1) Evacuation notice for certain areas in northern and central California with instructions, dated April 24, 1942, 'Instructions to All Persons of Japanese Ancestry...Pursuant to...Civilian Exclusion Order No. 19...all persons of Japanese ancestry, both alien and non-alien, will be evacuated from the above area by 12 o'clock noon, P.W.T., Friday, May 1, 1942....' signed in print J.L. DeWitt, Lt. General, US Army. Some very light toning and smudges, tiny pinholes, negligible mounting remnants on reverse, else in very good condition.
