After Frida Kahlo: Self Portrait with Monkey
After Frida Kahlo (Mexico, 1907-1954): Self Portrait with Monkey. Oil on canvas, signed lower right and verso, framed. Decorative stamps verso.

The original Self-Portrait with Monkey was commissioned in 1938 by A. Conger Goodyear, then president of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It is one of the many self-portraits painted by Kahlo for friends and patrons during her career.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter best known for her uncompromising and brilliantly colored self-portraits that deal with such themes as identity, the human body, and death. Although she denied the connection, she is often identified as a Surrealist. In addition to her work, Kahlo was known for her tumultuous relationship with muralist Diego Rivera.
