Letter & Invitation to the Wedding of Rabbi Leib Bakst in Shanghai, 1946.

This letter opens with Rabbi Leib Bakst’s excusing himself for not writing until now because of the terrible wounds of the past.( His entire family perished in the Holocaust.) He then expresses his gratitude to Hashem for comforting him with the Torah “for without it, I could not live.” After that, he shares news of his upcoming marriage on Lag Ba’omer, 5706 (1946) in Shanghai to the daughter of Hagaon Harav Mordechai Rogov, Av Beis Din of Sainy, Lithuania, author of Ateres Mordechai.

Original wedding invitation printed in Shanghai is attached.

Hagaon Harav Aryeh Leib Baskt (1915-2004) was from the great Mir Yeshiva Talmidim who disseminated Torah in America after the Holocaust. In his early youth, he gained repute as the ‘Genius of Delititz, ’ and by the age of bar mitzvah enrolled in the Mir Yeshivah where he was very close to the mashgiach Harav Yerucham Levovitz. With the outbreak of war, he fled with the Yeshivah to Vilna where he studied for a period of time under Harav Boruch Ber Lebowitz and the Brisker Rav before continuing on to Shanghai. The couple ultimately made their way to Detroit, where Rav Bakast was marbitz Torah for half a century.

Shanghai, 1946. Letter and invitation. Hole-punched.
