As the accompanying letter attests:
This painting was commissioned in 1875 by a painter looking for work. The Rebbetzin was approximately 15 years old at the time.
Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah was the mother of The Rebbe Rayatz - Reb Yoseph Yitzchok Schneerson. and Grandmother of Rebbetzin Chana Gurary.
Rebbetzin Chana Gurary gifted this painting to Rabbi Shaul Shimon Deutsch.
Rebbetzinn Shterna Sarah - 5th Chabad Rebbetzin 1860-1942 born in Russia.
Final resting place - Montefiore Cemetery Queens NY - across from Ohel of Reb Yoseph Yitzchok and The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel.
This is the first and only known color portrait of a Lubavitcher Rebbetzen.
Excellent condition considering its 146 years old. A remarkable resemblance to the later known photos.

We have now found a unpublished picture of the Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah which shows her wearing the same brooch-pin as seen in the painting. This photo was taken in Europe in the 1930's.
