Anitta Müller-Cohen – Handwritten and Hand Illustrated Album, from the Dedication Ceremony of the Anitta Müller-Cohen Convalescence Home for Mother and Child / Election Postcard of the Jewish National Party in Austria – Austria and Palestine, 1920s-1940s
Two items documenting the public activity of Anitta Müller-Cohen. Austria and Palestine, [1920s-1940s].
Anitta Müller-Cohen (1890-1962), a social worker, journalist and politician, founded and managed various rescue, aid and welfare organizations in Europe during the interwar period, and later in Palestine. Headed the Mizrachi Women Organization and was the president of Hitachdut Olej Austria (Union of Austrian Immigrants).
These are two items documenting her work in Austria and Palestine:
1. Election-postcard issued by the Jewish national Party (Jüdischnationale Partei) in Austria towards the elections for the Austrian National Council (Nationalrat) that took place on October 7, 1920. Printed on the front are portrait pictures of Anitta Müller-Cohen and the party's leader Robert Stricker, alongside a description of their work and achievements. Printed on verso is a text dealing with the necessity of the existence of an independent Jewish party to represent the Jews in the national council.
Approx. 14X9 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains and creases. Minor blemishes.
2. Large album, handwritten and hand-illustrated, made for the ceremony of the dedication of the convalescence home for mother and child named after Anitta Müller-Cohen. Palestine, [1940?]. German and some Hebrew.
The album contains seven large leaves; written on the last leaf: " A decision of the Mizrachi Women to establish a convalescence home for mother and child named after Anitta Müller-Cohen " (in Hebrew, on an entire page). On the other six leaves – a world map ("On Land and Sea"), depicting Müller-Cohen's diverse public activity; a map of Palestine ("In the Country"); drawings accompanying sheet music for compositions by Luigi Boccherini and Joseph Hayden, which were played during the dedication of the convalescence home, and more. Ten smaller leaves, written in German, are bound between these leaves – a kind of programme for the ceremony (the order of the ceremony, the various speakers who reviewed Müller-Cohen's activities and achievements during, and more). Possibly, the album was given to Müller-Cohen as a souvenir from the event.
The album refers to "Mrs. Zunz" as the one who wrote and sketched it (possibly, the ceramic artist Hanna Charag-Zuntz).
[17] leaves. Large leaves: 50 cm. (one of them folded, 62 cm.); small leaves: approx. 33 cm. Fair-good condition. Detached leaves. Fold lines and creases. Much foxing. Tears and minor blemishes. Thick paper cover. Album bound with string in its upper margins.
Enclosed: a studio photograph, presumably of Anitta Müller-Cohen and her husband (Cabinet Card of the studio of photographer Julius Gertinger in Vienna).
