BALDUR VON SCHIRACH
BALDUR VON SCHIRACH
(1907 - 1974) Head of the Hitler Youth 1933 - 1940 and Gauleiter and Governor of Vienna, convicted of crimes against humanity in the Nuremberg trials and sentenced to 20 years in prison. A letter signed 'Baldur', in English to an American friend, the letter is written in another hand, 7 pages, 6 x 8 inches, n.p., October 21, 1968. In part: 'I include the interview I gave to Monsieur Bernert the chief editor of L'Aurore, Paris. After the interview, he published a full-page Schirach every day for three weeks. He wrote to me 'To my great astonishment we received not one letter of protest or negative criticisms [sic]...L'Aurore is read all over Israel because we always considered Israel a holy cause but even our friends from there have made no complaints.' You are right when you say, be careful with reporters. But dear Ed, topmen like David Frost or Philipp Bernert are not local reporters...I never give interviews to 2nd class journalists. Ina wrote this letter for me to spare my eyes...'. Signed in black ink at conclusion. Small staple holes at top left.
