New York: Henry Frank 1854 (or 1853)

HEIDENHEIM EDITION. THE FIRST SUCH MACHZOR PRINTED IN AMERICA. Issued by the Jewish printing establishment of Henry (Chaim) Frank of New York and based upon the celebrated Wolf Heidenheim edition, this prayer-book enabled the newly rising community of Aschkenazi American Jews to conduct services according to their own custom, as opposed to that of the Sephardic rite. See Goldman (Hebrew Printing in America, no. 40) who notes that the printer also prepared a version of the High Holiday Machzor for German Jews alongside this Polish version. Goldman however does not possess a copy of this Polish edition. See Kestenbaum Sale 55, lot 20.
