Richmond, VA: 5th September 1808

A son of Jacob Mordecai, pioneer of women’s education in the United States, Samuel Jefferson Mordecai fought in the Richmond Light Infantry in the War of 1812. He was a teacher in his father’s school, and the author of “Richmond in By-Gone Days” published under the pseudonym “An Old Citizen” in 1856. Joseph Marx (1772-1840), originally of Hanover, was active in the Congregation Beth Shalome in Richmond, along with Mordecai. He was an acquaintance of Thomas Jefferson (see Rosenbloom Biographical Dictionary of Early American Jews).
