Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv [1910-2012] was born in Šiauliai, Lithuania - an only child, born to his parents after seventeen years of marriage. In 1924, his family immigrated to Eretz Yisrael and settled in the Meah Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem. He assisted his grandfather, kabalist Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv, with the authoring of his monumental work 'Leshem Shevo V'Achlama'. He studied Torah in various batei medrash in Jerusalem and later became known as the foremost posek of the generation and the primary leader of ultra-Orthodox Ashkenazic Jewry.
