An Important Document from Salonika. Mention of Well-Known Historical Figures and Signatures of the City's Sages. 1577
A rare ancient contract on financial matters which was made between very rich men in the city of Salonika in 1577. A very extremely rare and important historical document about the history of Jewish trade in Salonika in the 16th century.
[1] paper leaf. 21*15cm.
The contract was made between "the exalted wise man Rabbi Yitzchak Novaro" (mentioned in the Responsa of the Maharashdam Choshen Mishpat 20 with the same title) and between the exalted man Don Yehuda Abarbanel – a well-known rich man from Salonika – refer to M. Benayahu Beit Abarbanel in Salonika – Asufot volume 11.
In addition, Rabbi Yosef Karo is mentioned, as the aforementioned Don Yehuda appointed him as responsible for all of his businesses and concerns (M. Benayahu is of the opinion that there was another Rabbi in Salonika at that time by the name Rabbi Yosef Karo, refer to his article in Sinai volume 28 page 192). Rabbi Yosef Gedaliah (most likely a member of the famous family of authors and publishers).
The witnesses who signed on the contract who it seems were amongst the Rabbis of the city are Rabbi Yitzchak Brodo, Rabbi Mordechai Salonikui and Rabbi Yitzchak Beirav or Ben Lev?

Professionally restored tears with damage to text. Fine condition.
