ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS
(1812 - 1883) Vice President of the Confederacy who urged moderation and negotiation with the Union. Excellent A.Q.S. 'Alexander H. Stephens' on a pink slip, 5.75 x 4 in., bearing the inspirational quote: 'Blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God'. This quote is quite ironic, considering his pre-Civil War 'Cornerstone Address' infamously stated: 'our new government['s] foundations are laid...upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man.' Stephens signs at the conclusion, adding the hand-inked place 'Washington D.C.' and date '18th March 1880'. Some cockling and light smudges near signature, else fine. Mounted to a 7 x 4.75 in. white slip, which is then loosely mounted to a 8 x 11 in. piece of cardstock.
