ANTOINE-CLAIR THIBAUDEAU AND LOUIS-ALEXANDRE BERTHIER
ANTOINE-CLAIR THIBAUDEAU (1765-1854) French politician who voted for the death of Louis XVI, yet declined to join the Jacobin Club to much suspicion. Later served as President of the National Convention, favoring Napoleon's assumption of power. Great association A.L.S. 'A. C. Thibaudeau' on Councillor of State letterhead, 1p. 4to., Paris, Apr. 17, 1802, a letter to Secretary of War LOUIS-ALEXANDRE BERTHIER (1753 - 1815), requesting that a relative of his, one 'Citizen Mignon', be permitted to go to Egypt to enter service there as a sergeant or second lieutenant, stating that Mignon had previously been a Sergeant in the Battallion of Basque hunters. Thibaudeau adds that the Secretary of the Navy will authorize it once Berthier adds his approval, concluding: '...I invite you to second the desire of a young 20-year-old man has of being useful to his country...'. Berthier adds his approval at the lower-left corner, then pens his initials. Bertier was a French Marshall who served under Lafayette in the American Revolution, and with Napoleon in Italy and Egypt as his Chief of Staff and Minster of War. A section has been clipped from the top edge, removing some letters of the letterhead, one .5 in. marginal tear at upper left, archivally repaired on the verso. Fine, and clearly legible.
