LEONARD WOOD
(1860 - 1927) American general who, with Theodore Roosevelt, organized and led the Rough Riders, Governor of Cuba and Commander of U.S. forces in the Philippines. Great war-date T.L.S. on Headquarters Eastern Department letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Governors Island, NY, Nov. 20, 1916, acknowledging receipt of the military application of one Thatcher T. P. Luquer and forwarding the paperwork to his aide-de-camp 'Major Dorey, who is in charge of these matters.' Wood signs at the conclusion. Small ink stain, else fine. After serving as Wood's aid, HALSTEAD DOREY (1874-1946) rose to the rank of major general, commanded the 4th Infantry Regiment during World War I, and was decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership. Luquer would later rise to lieutenant colonel, where he would command the 306th Engineers Regiment, 81st Division, and see service in Tronchoy, St. Die, Langres, and the Sommedieue sector of the Meuse-Argonne offensive shortly before war's end.
