FRANZ HALDER
(1884 -1972) One-time German chief of staff until transferred to the reserves by Hitler due to policy disputes. Suspected of plotting against Hitler's life in 1944, he was interned at Flossenburg and Dachau until his rescue by the Allies. Directed and planned Operation Barbarossa in 1941 and had a decisive role in the development of 'the myth of the clean Wehrmacht' in the post-war era. Recipient of Knight's Cross. T.L.S., 1p., legal folio, Karlsruhe, Germany. March 13, 1958, to a collector about sending him a signed correspondence from Field Marshall WILHELM LEEB (1876-1956). In part: 'From the immortalized Field Marshal Wilhelm v. Leeb. At the moment I only have one original letter on hand.... letters from wartime are no longer available to me. When I was informed beforehand by friends of mine of my imminent arrest by Hitler in 1944, I destroyed all correspondence in order to remove evidence of the connection with other persons.' Halder signs the conclusion in black ink. Fine condition.
