NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN
(1869 - 1940) British Prime Minister best known for his appeasement foreign policy, and in particular for his signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938, conceding the Sudetenland region and declaring that he had won 'peace for our time'. The next year, Germany invaded Poland, and Chamberlain led Britain through the first eight months of the conflict before being replaced by Winston Churchill. Rare and historic S.P. 'N. Chamberlain', 5.5 x 3.75 in. b/w, a German photo postcard showing Chamberlain signing the Munich Agreement, surrounded by French Prime Minister Edouard Daladier and high-ranking German officials. Chamberlain signs at lower-right in blue ink. The postcard was published by the studio of Heinrich Hoffmann, Adolf Hitler's personal photographer. Fine condition. Sold with an additional photograph of Chamberlain meeting with Adolf Hitler, as well as a T.L.S. from a representative of the Prime Minister, 1p. 8vo., 10. Downing Street, Dec. 12, 1939, thanking a Mrs. Wallace - presumably the previous owner of the photograph - for her sending a previous letter. This letter was sent less than two months after the signing of the Munich Pact.
