DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
(1880 - 1964) American general and Allied Supreme Commander in the Pacific in World War II, accepted the surrender of Japan and later dismissed by Truman for advocating an invasion of China. Outstanding original autograph quote, signed on a 5 x 2 in. white slip, in full: 'In war, there is no substitute for victory. Douglas MacArthur' This wonderful piece is presented matted in deep green cloth with gilt wood fillets, surmounted by a photograph of MacArthur with his corncob pipe, along with an engraved biographical plaque at bottom. The entirety is set into a dark green and gilt wood frame embellished with gold stars in relief. On April 19, 1951, after he was fired by Truman for seeking a wider war with China, MacArthur delivered his farewell address to Congress. It included the above quote, in context: '...But once war is forced upon us, there is no other alternative than to apply every available means to bring it to a swift end. War's very object is victory, not prolonged indecision. In war there is no substitute for victory...'
