Bill Traylor (American, 1854-1947) Manner of / Attributed: Man with a Plough. Gouache on cardboard, signed in pencil top center. This painting is unframed. The man plowing is a motif Traylor used on numerous occasions.

Bill Traylor was born a slave on a plantation near Benton, Alabama. Traylor's art career began when he was 85. "It just come to me, " he recollected to a reporter in 1946. Though his time painting was short, to this day he remains a well-known folk artist celebrated for his stark and simple drawings with colored pencils in a flat, child-like style depicting images of plantation and street life, animals and people going about their lives in the segregated South before and after the Civil War.

Condition Report:
Very aged condition with heavy foxing, stains, soiling, and a noticeable crease in the lower left. Parts of old hinging is adhered to the back.
