Catalogue of the famed Straschun library.
The library was amassed by R. Mattisyohu
Straschun who was an important member of the
Vilna community. It contained over 5500 seforim
and was renowned as one the most important
scholarly collections in the world. Upon his demise
he bequeathed it to the community, whereupon it
became one the city’s most important landmarks,
attracting scholars and writers from across the
broad spectrum of Lithuania’s Jewish population.
After the Holocaust, its surviving remnants were
divided amongst various libraries, including the
YIVO institute in New York.
