Collection of Tree-Planting Certificates – Jewish National Fund – United States, Second half of 20th Century
Roughly 50 colorful illustrated certificates in recognition of donations toward planting trees in Israel (Palestine). Issued by the Jewish National Fund (JNF) in the United States. New York, mostly from the 2nd half of the 20th century. Hebrew and English.
The name of the forest in which a given tree has been planted is indicated on some of the certificates. The forests include the American Mizrachi Women Forest, Forest of the Six Million, the Bar Kochba Forest, the American Bicentennial National Park in Israel (today American Independence Park), and others. One of the certificates, dating from 1946, was designed by the American graphic artist Sol Nodel.
On some of the certificates, the names of the donors were filled in in handwriting or by typewriter. Many of the certificates were never filled in, and some were marked "Sample" either in handwriting or in print.
Enclosed: Jewish New Year (Shana Tova) greeting card; paper sheet with spaces for pasting ten 45-cent JNF stamps, representing money donated toward the planting of trees in the Children's Forest in Israel; small poster printed by the JNF to be colored in by children and hung up for display in the classroom; two official letters from JNF representatives on JNF stationery; several envelopes.
Approx. 50 certificates. Size and condition vary. Overall good condition.
Provenance: The Morton Leventhal Collection, New York.
