MILLAIS JOHN EVERETT: (1829-1896) English Painter, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. A.L.S., J E Millais, one page, 8vo, Bowerswell, Perth, 9th September 1893, to J. M. Saul. Millais writes, in full, 'I really forget when I exhibited Pizaro (sic) but you may find out by consulting the RA catalogues either at the Royal Academy or British Museum'. With blank integral leaf (slight traces of former mounting to the verso). Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Millais. VG Pizarro Seizing the Inca of Peru was painted by Millais in 1846 and is currently housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It was the first painting by Millais to be exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1846, six years after he had been admitted to the Royal Academy Schools as their youngest ever student. Bowerswell House, from where the present letter was written, had been the location for the marriage of Effie Gray to John Ruskin in 1848. The marriage was annulled six years later and Gray left Ruskin, without the relationship being consummated. Bowerswell House was again the venue for Gray's subsequent marriage to Millais in 1855.
