Letter from the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Fisher, Av Beit Din of Tét, Beloved Disciple of the Chatam Sofer

Lengthy letter [4 pages] of Torah thoughts from the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Akiva Fisher, rabbi of Tét and beloved disciple of the Chatam Sofer's; one of his household. Tét, 1881. Letters from him are rare, especially so lengthy.

The letter before us was sent to his son-in-law, Rabbi Moshe Yom Tov Lipman Stern of Budapest, who married the former's daughter, Chayah, that year - 1881. In the letter, his love for his son-in-law is evident. At the end of the responsum is a passage written in Yiddish, apparently from the Rebbetzin to her daughter.

Rabbi Akiva Fisher [c. 1818-1894] studied for eight years in yeshivah under the Chatam Sofer, and was a member of his household. He was a son-in-law of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Rosenblum, rabbi of Bicske, who was a brother of Rabbi Amram Chasida. Rabbi Akiva was rabbi of Oikeh and in 1848 was appointed as Av Beit Sin of Tét, where he served until his passing. His name is mentioned very often in Shu"t Rabbi Yehudah Assad, who describes him in exalted terms: "Kindred spirit, the rabbi, the great light ... wondrous expert ... lofty and pious ... His novellae are printed in the book Ateret Akiva (several parts).
