Bundle of Letters from Yemenite Rabbis in the Land of Israel, 1840s


Bundle of [7] letters handwritten by prominent Yemenite rabbis in the Land of Israel.


1) Letter from 1902, handwritten by Rabbi Avraham Chaim Nadaf (1866-1940), a multifaceted expert in the revealed and the hidden, dayan in the beit din and one of the leading sages of Yemen, cornerstone of the Yemenite community in the Land of Israel, where he ascended in 1891 and devoted his life to founding institutions of Torah and chessed. He authored the books: Anaf Chaim, Pitchon Tov, Mevaser Tov and others (Encyclopedia L'Toldot Chachmei Teiman p. 380).


2) Letter from 1937 handwritten by Rabbi Shalom Yosef Alshich (1859-1944), Ra'avad and head of the community in Jerusalem. He was one of the leading sages of Yemen. He ascended to the Land of Israel in 1891 and was very active on behalf of Yemenite Jewry (ibid. p. 25). Sent to the above-mentioned Rabbi Avraham Chaim Nadaf.


3) Letter from 1928, handwritten by Rabbi Amram b"r Yichye Korach (1871-1953), who was the last chief rabbi in Sana'a. He ascended to Jerusalem and was one of the most prominent leaders of the Yemenite community. He authored Sa'arot Teiman, and Neve Shalom (ibid, p. 562). Sent to the above-mentioned Rabbi Avraham Chaim Nadaf.


4) Letter handwritten by Rabbi Ya'akov Amrani (1875-1951), was one of the sages at the general yeshivah in Sana'a, dayan from c. 1910 (ibid, p. 458).


5) Leaf of Torah novellae by Rabbi Avraham Arussi (1878-1934, ibid. p. 474) from his work To'afot Re'em. Apparently written in his own hand.


6-7) There are two other letters, one signed by Levi Chamdi (apparently a grandson of the great Rabbi Levi Chamdi) and a lengthy letter signed by Salem ben Salem Korach).
