Pachad Yitzchak – Venice 1750 – First Edition
Pachad Yitzchak, a Halachic Encyclopedia written by Rabbi Yitzchak Chizkiya Lampronti (1619-1757), a rabbi and doctor in Padua and in Ferrara. This is the first Hebrew encyclopedia in alphabetical order, and one of the first encyclopedias in the whole world.
The encyclopedia includes explanations of concepts and expressions in the Talmud the Midrash and the Rabbinic literature up until the 17th century, and also short biographies, "Seder dorot" (genealogy), legends, proverbs and bibliography lists. In this work Rabbi Lampronti concentrated a large amount of information which up until then had existed only in manuscripts of responsa.
Before us is the first volume of the encyclopedia (letters aleph – bet), which was printed by the author himself in the year 1750 in Venice.
In the year 1753 the second volume (letters gimmel-daled) was printed. The other sections up until the letter mem were printed after his death by his son Shlomo, first in Venice and afterwards in Livorno. The remnants of the manuscript were printed in the 19th century by Chevrat Mekitze Nirdamim.
76 pages.
Condition: Good. A few moth holes.
