Manuscript from Chust
Handwritten manuscript of Torah and Talmudic novellae including lessons, testimonials & responsa by the Divray Chaim of Sanz, chiddushei Hari'm, Maharam Ash and other prominent Hungarian sages.

Autographed by Harav Pinchas Naftali Schwartz of Chust.

Hagaon Harav Pinchas Naftali Schwartz of Chust (1825-1885), author of the Nefesh Tovah, was the son of Harav Yitzchak Schwartz, Av Beis Din of Gombin.
As a pupil of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz, he obtained his rabbi’s blessing to travel to Ungvar to study under the Maharam Ash who greatly esteemed his young protégé and entrusted him with compiling and editing his writings.
Harav Pinchas Naftali subsequently settled in Chust where he cultivated a close relationship with local Rabbanim  specifically Maharam Schick who consulted him frequently on halachic issues.Harav Schwartz expertly edited and prepared both Shu”t Maharam Schick and Shu”t Maharam Ash for print. At his funeral, he was eulogized by the Av Beis Din of Chust Harav Yoel Tzvi Roth, author of the Beis Hayotzer, and was laid to rest beside his mentor, Maharam Schick.

Harav Pinchas Naftali Schwartz’s writings encompass a copy of a letter sent by the Divrei Chaim of Sanz regarding a debate between the Chassidim and Misdnagdim in Ihel; three additional responsa (later printed in Shu”t Divrei Chaim Orach Chaim, Vol. 1 Ch. 29; Vol. 2 Ch. 171-2); and another responsa by the Chiddushei Harim regarding an agunah (printed in Shu”t Harim, Orach Chaim Ch. 10). This manuscript includes the actual text of the question, which was posed by Rabbi Zev Lifschitz, Av Beis Din of Azarkov, and does not appear in Shu”t Harim.

In his own novellae, Harav Pinchas Naftali Schwartz summarizes numerous lessons gleaned from his master the Maharam Ash, as well as abundant divrei Torah and halachah that he heard directly from prominent Hungarian sages such as Harav Shmuel Shmelke of Selish, author of the Kol Aryeh. He calls special attention to the teachings of his dear friend Hagaon Harav Yehudah Greenfeld, Av Beis Din of Szentmihály and father of the Maharshag.

The contents of this manuscript is mainly the chiddushim of Harav Pinchas Naftali Schwartz, in which he cites many classic Chassidic works. Several sections were included in his sefer Nefesh Tovah.

Chust, 1847-1883. Autographed manuscript. The page preceding the title page bears the signatures of both the author and his son Harav Avraham Yekusiel Schwartz who published his father’s work Nefesh Tovah.

60 leaves; light green paper. Good condition. Minor tears on last pages. New leather binding.
