JACOB RIIS
(1849 - 1914) American photographer and journalist who undertook to improve slum conditions in the schools and tenements of New York. Interesting content A.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 8vo., New York, Apr. 17, 1908, in part: '...half the world has gone crazy...became desirable to have our books thrown open for public examination...I write this to ask you that the books be put in such condition...the examiners may walk in at any moment. I think there must be a microbe of insanity abroad...' Very good.
