GROVER CLEVELAND
(1837 - 1908) 22nd and 24th President of the United States, supported civil service and fiscal reform. Partly-printed D.S. as president, 1p. 20 x 16 in., Washington D.C., April 23, 1886, the appointment of Edwin Warfield as 'Surveyor of Customs for the Port of Baltimore in the State of Maryland'. Cosigned at bottom by Acting Secretary of the Treasury CHARLES S. FAIRCHILD (1842 - 1924), and features patriotic vignette at top with blind-embossed seal at bottom-left. Mounted to thick cardstock, though beginning to come loose on some edges. Tears and chips to the edges, stained at spots, estimated accordingly. Edwin Warfield later served as the Governor of Maryland from 1904 to 1912, and was a relative of Bessie Wallis Warfield Simpson - later the Duchess of Windsor - whose marriage to English King Edward VIII led to his abdication of the throne.
