1916 WATERCOLOR PAINTING, 13TH CANADIAN SHELL-STRUCK TRENCH
Excellent original ink and watercolor battle scene executed and signed by Canadian artist Lt. JOHN MCQUEEN MOYES (1888-1948) while serving with the 13th Canadian Battalion, The Royal Highlanders of Canada, in 1916. The 8 x 6 in. painting depicts a nighttime view of a 13th Canadian trench destroyed by an artillery hit. The artist captions his work: 'Sketch showing portion of Durham Avenue June 6th 1916'. Signed by Moyes at bottom and dated 1916. Fine condition. Moyes served for the length of the war and received two wounds in his left leg. One of his works is displayed in the Canadian War Museum.
