RED ARMY AND 1ST INFANTRY DIVISION MEET AT THE ELBE
Fine lot of seven original photographs from the estate of Lt. Gen. CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), commander of the 1st Infantry Division, popularly known as the 'Big Red One' during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, where it was the first force to face the Germans on Omaha Beach. The images, various sizes, show Huebner at the Torgau crossing of the Elbe, a feast with dancing by Russian soldiers, and presentation of a Russian standard to Huebner. Fine. On 25 April 1945, now remembered as 'Elbe Day', units of the 1st Army and the Soviet First Ukrainian Front met on the bridge at Torgau. The unit commanders met the following day at Torgau for an official handshake. This marked the beginning of the line of contact between Soviet and American forces.
