R. Yaakov Yisroel Kanievsky (1899–1985), was known as the Steipler Gaon after his hometown Hornosteipel. Orphaned at young age, he learned in the Novardok Yeshiva, where he was renowned for his great diligence. Following his marriage to the sister of the Chazon Ish, he served as Rosh Yeshiva of the Novardok Yeshiva in Pinsk until 1934, when he emigrated to Eretz Yisroel settling in Bnei Brak. World renowned, he shunned publicity and lived in humble surroundings, teaching, writing and devoting himself to Torah and Chesed. His magnum opus the multi-volume Kehillos Yaakov on most of Shas was enthusiastically received and is an important Talmudic work, learned in many Yeshivos.
