Aruch Ha'Shulachan! R. Yechiel Michel HaLevi Epstein/ Aruch HaShulchan. Novardok 1875. Rare!
Historic letter between one of the greatest rabbinical leaders of the generation to one of the most influential lay leaders.
Fascinating letter regarding personal family issues written to R. Avrohom Harkavi. The Aruch Ha’Shulchan writes that it is against his nature to write such a letter, however due to the nature of the circumstances he cannot remain silent.
R. Yechiel Michel HaLevi Epstein (1830-1908), was known as one of the great rabbinical leaders and Poskim of his era. In 1873, he was appointed as Rav of Novardok where he served with great distinction until his passing. His magnum opus Aruch HaShulchan was received with great acclaim and remains a classic Halachic sefer.
R. Avrohom Harkavi (1835-1919), was descended from the Talmidei Ha’Gra who settled in Yerusholayim. He travelled from Yerusholayim to learn in Volozhin and later graduated from the Teacher’s Institute in Vilna. In 1863, he enrolled at the University of St Petersburg, where he studied Oriental Languages and graduated with a Masters in 1868. He was a respected scholar and in 1876, was appointed head of the Oriental Division in the Imperial Public Library. As such he was one of the most influential Jews in Czarist Russia.
