At the end of the letter R. Shlomo Zalman writes “I still maintain my position”, with regard to a halachic ruling he issued regarding moving something muktzah to prevent electricity turning on.
R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (1910-1995), was a son of R. Chaim Yehuda Leib Auerbach and was recognized from a young age as an outstanding Talmid Chochom and Posek. In 1935, at the young age of 24, he published his first sefer, Meorei Aish, on the subject of use of electricity on Shabbos. The sefer earned the approbations of the leading Gedolim of the time, including R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky, R. Isser Zalman Meltzer and Rav Kook. Eventually, R. Shlomo Zalman became one of the world’s leading Poskim. His refined character and gentle sensitivity won him reverence in all circles of Orthodox Jewry, apparent at his funeral which was attended by an estimated 300,000 people.
