A foundational work with an important historical signature: A set of the six sidrei Mishnah, first edition bearing the Bartenura commentary, Venice 1548-1549 with Sefardi handwritten notes and signatures.

Complete set, two volumes containing the six sidrei Mishnah “with the commentary of the Rav Ovadya of Bartenura…” the first edition bearing such commentary, which is now widely read across the Jewish nation and has become an important foundational commentary for studying the Mishnah. Stefanski Sifrei Yesod 32. Separate title page for each Seder, this copy is missing the title pages for 2 seders (Zra’im and Nezikin) as well as the last page of Seder Nashim. In addition, at the end of Seder Taharot there are 5 pages which were missing but filled in with Rashi script in an outlay matching the original pages. 73; 87; 66; 85, [1]; 97, [1]; 126 leaves in the original. New bindings, tape on some pages, stains and moth holes, defects to the text in some places. Overall good condition.

The title pages and blank first pages have notes in Sefardi handwriting and various Sefardi signatures, some from the period of the book’s printing(!). The body of the work has notes and handwritten corrections (not checked thoroughly). One of the title pages has the signature: “Shlomo Gavison”—probably the handwritten signature (matches the time period according to its characteristics, perhaps the only extant signature) of Rabbi Shlomo Gavison (died before 1608), a gaon and sage in Egypt (Cairo), who refused to allow the Karaites to convert (the Radbaz disagreed with him and allowed them to). In the Shut Maharam Gavison some of his tshuvot are included, and he is also mentioned in the book of drashot of Rabbi Haim Hevraya.

Additional signatures: “the young Yehuda ben Rabbi Matzli’ach – Yehi Yosef Nakash – this book is mine I am the young Yehuda Per…[cut off] – Yosef Alemsi – Yosef Elkabetz – Yehezkel Menzeli…? Haim Cohen”. Also a note in Yemenite handwriting: “Born … Meoded HaKohen ben Sa’adiya HaKohen … year 1635 – Sa’adiya HaKohen – Yosef Abu/Avo.”
