Bnai Jeshurun, only the second synagogue consecrated in New York and the third-oldest Ashkenazi synagogue in the United States, was founded in 1825 by a coalition that broke away from Congregation Shearith Israel. Its stated intention was to follow the "German and Polish rite as practiced in the Ashkenazi Great Synagogue of London.” In 1865, the congregation moved to a new building on 34th Street (in later years this parcel of land became the site of Macy's flagship store). Presently, Congregation Bnai Jeshurun is located on 88th Street off West End Avenue where it has been since 1917.
