Poet Penina Moïse (1797-1880) wrote 60 of the 74 hymns - likely the very first hymnal composed for a Jewish congregation in America. Following its appearance in 1842, the volume was expanded to include 190 of Moïse’s hymns for this second, revised and enlarged edition. Front free-endpaper with inscription: “To the Rev. D. Einhorn, A token of profound collegial esteem and friendship. Dr. M. Myers, Minister of the Reform Congregation Beth Elo-him, Charleston, South Carolina, Eve of Shabungoth, 5616, June 8th, 1856.”
