DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. A superb association typed letter on his SHAEF letterhead, signed by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower only four days before Germany would surrender at Reims and the day after the German surrender in Italy had taken effect. Incredibly, Ike takes the time to write this May 3, 1945 letter, 6 x 8 inches, to a regular civilian in London. In full: “Thank you for your letter and condolences on the death of the President. It was most kind of you to write and I am truly appreciative…” Eisenhower signs rapidly at the conclusion. Near fine condition. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had died suddenly on April 12, and Eisenhower’s mail was undoubtedly trailing him significantly. In a matter of a day or two, he would leave for Reims to negotiate the German surrender.
