CHESTER W. NIMITZ
(1885 - 1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the sucessful 'island-hopping' campaign against the Japanese. A fine content typed letter signed, written to a man and accepting his thanks on behalf of the men who fought in the Pacific under Nimitz’s command. The 5.5 x 8.5 inch letter, dated Dec. 5, 1945 and on Nimitz’s “Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet” letterhead, reads in part: “…Thank you for your letter of September 1 [the day before the Japanese surrender] which has just arrived at my Pearl Harbor headquarters. I appreciate your kind words and accept your congratulations on behalf of the more than two million officers and men of the Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas whose loyalty and devotion to duty hastened the surrender of the Japanese nation…” Nimitz was the representative of the United States in the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS MISSOURI on September 2, 1945.
