MATTHEW B. RIDGWAY

(1895 - 1994) American Army general who led airborne assaults on Sicily, jumped with his 82nd Airborne during the Normandy invasion, and commanded U.N. forces in the Korean War. Good association T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Oct. 28, 1980, Pittsburgh, PA, to the wife of the mayor of Sainte Mere Eglise - a town on the coast of Normandy when American paratroopers disastrously landed on D-Day. In part: 'Our dear friends the Michaels invited us to their house...then gave us all the treasured gifts you had asked them to bring to us...the copy of SAINT MERE EGLISE, FIRST AMERICAN BRIDGEHEAD IN FRANCE, by your illustrious husband...Thank you from the heart for everything and most of all for your unceasing efforts to keep before your younger people, who did not experience the Liberationthe meaning of the ties which bind us together...' Ridgway also forwards an inscribed photograph (not present), and signs at the conclusion in black ink. Very good.
