DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
(1880 - 1964) American general and Allied Supreme Commander in the Pacific in World War II, accepted the surrender of Japan and was later dismissed by Truman for advocating an invasion of China. Great content war-date T.L.S as Commanding General on scarce United States Army Forces in the Far East letterhead, 1p. 6 x 7.5 in. (sight), Aug. 28, 1941, to a Major General PAUL B. MALONE (1872 - 1960), U.S. officer who participated in the Spanish-American War, Philippine-American Wars, and the final year of World War I. MacArthur confidently writes: '...I have every confidence that if war comes, I can successfully defend these Islands. I only wish you were here with me...'. He signs at the conclusion. Less than six months later, MacArthur would be forced to retreat from the Philippines, fleeing Corregidor on March 11, 1942. Left behind were 76,000 starving and sick American and Filipino defenders in Bataan and the 13,000 survivors on Corregidor. Attractively double-matted and framed with a b/w photograph of the general and multiple explanatory placards, to a total size of 18 x 28 in.. Very light spots of foxing, else very good to fine.
