JAMES EARL RAY

(1928 - 1998) Assassin of Martin Luther King whom he killed in Memphis in 1968. Good content A.L.S. "James", 1p. 4to., [Tennessee State Penitentiary, Nashville, TN], Apr. 12, 1990, to his wife Anna Sandhu Ray, whom he married in jail in 1978 and divorced in 1993. Interestingly, Ray writes to Anna about the couple's divorce plans, three years before Ray was officially granted permission to divorce his wife by the State of Tennessee. In part: "Tomorrow I am going to ask the chancery court to mail you the process form for the divorceI wouldn't waste any money on an attorney especially if you don't intend to contestwe can still keep in contactit may be necessary for me to appear in court for the proceeding, if so the divorce won't go throughI don't have a legal right to appear in State court, just federal" He adds: "Some sent me the article quoting you in the Enquirer & the GlobeI don't know if the articles will help anyoneregardless of what you or I say, the headlinewill always be about 'killer this & killer that'" Ray signs at the conclusion in black ink. Significant spots of staining, ragged bottom edge, minor 1 in. split at bottom edge, archivally repaired on verso. Still good condition, with text clearly readable.
