JAMES EARL RAY

(1928 - 1998) Assassin of Martin Luther King whom he killed in Memphis in 1968. A.L.S. "James" on Hotel Sheraton letterhead, 1p. 4to., [Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, Petros, TN], Dec. 3, 1978, to his wife Anna Sandhu Ray whom he married in jail less than two months before this letter was written. Ray writes somewhat cryptically, probably about wedding-related matters. In part: "It was a nice visit with you today angel, although you did appear a little tired please don't worry too muchTomorrow I will have finished & mailed the affidavit to the committee, then I will have more time for you we will succeed with the alter [?], we are not teenagers but we have plenty [of] time what with all of my you know what & they will always be just for you" He signs at the conclusion in blue ink. Sold with transmittal envelope, which bears Ray's prisoner number, the abbreviation "B.M.P.", and the address of the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary.
