LOUIS PAULHAN AND THE FIRST DAILY MAIL AVIATION PRIZE

LOUIS PAULHAN (1883 - 1963) Pioneering French aviator, known for winning the first Daily Mail aviation prize for the first flight between London and Manchester in 1910. Between 1906 and 1930, the Daily Mail newspaper awarded numerous prizes for achievements in aviation. In April 1910, he won the London to Manchester air race, taking the 10,000 prize offered for flying from London to Manchester, a distance of 195 miles. Paulhan arrived in Manchester 12 hours after setting out from London, having spent 4 hours and 12 minutes in the air, with an overnight stop at Lichfield, 117 miles from his starting point. A large grouping of photos and letters largely concerning Paulhan's amazing (at the time!) 1910 flying achievement. Included is: a 1960 A.L.S. by Paulhan forwarding this grouping to the French Aero Club upon the 50th anniversary of his flight: "...they will give you a picture of what I was able to accomplish..."; an Apr. 30, 1910 Lower Alps Consul General's letter of congratulations; two later telegrams of congratulation; 12 newspaper clippings and first pages, most from his famous flight; eleven period photographs, advertisements, etc. of Paulhan and his airplanes, a few presumably from the Manchester flight; and later letters and ephemera, most with translations.
