JACK SWIGERT
(1931 - 1982) American astronaut who replaced Ken Mattingly on the Apollo 13 mission only three days before launch. It was Swigert who uttered the fateful words: "Houston, we have a problem here." A.L.S. "Jack", 1p. 4to., [Houston], Dec. 20, 1969, thanking a "Ken", likely a Volkswagen employee, for his automotive help and wishing him a Merry Christmas. Swigert signs at the conclusion in black ink. Four months after this letter was written, Swigert served as the command module pilot for the Apollo 13 space mission. Fine, with transmittal envelope.
