AARON BURR

(1756 - 1836) Vice President under Jefferson with whom he had been tied in the Presidential election of 1800, defeated through the efforts of Alexander Hamilton who he later killed in a duel. Partly-printed D.S. "Aaron Burr", as a member of the New York state assembly, 1p., 7.5 x 3 in., New York, Jan. 21, 1800, a bank check making a payment in the amount of $2,500 to one "Thomas Barrow". Spindle hole and cut cancel, both missing signature, else near fine. John Vanderlyn (1776 - 1852) was a young artist who was encouraged by Burr to come to New York to study. For three years, he was employed by Thomas Barrow, one of the earliest art dealers in the city, so one could easily speculate that this check was either to help support Venderlyn of was used to purchase art.
