WARREN G. HARDING
(1865 - 1923) Twenty-ninth President of the United States. Fine association T.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, July 27, 1922 to "Brig. Gen. C. E. Sawyer". In part: "My dear General Sawyer: If you have not seen it, the enclosed telegram [not present] will be of interest to you. I hasten to put it in your possession..." Docketed in pencil, noting: "Dawes telegram", near fine. Charles Elmer Sawyer (1860�1924) was a homeopathic physician who was the longtime personal doctor to Harding and his wife Florence. Sawyer is often blamed for Harding's death, having prescribed powerful purgatives which were claimed to have caused the president's heart attack. His title of "General" was strictly honorary.
