HERBERT HOOVER PRAISES "BRINGING UP FATHER" CARTOONIST, GEORGE MCMANUS
(1874-1964) 31st President of the United States whose attempts to reverse the course of the Great Depression led to his defeat at the polls by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Good association T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Oct. 30, 1951, a letter of praise of George McManus and his comic strip "Bringing Up Father", sent to a representative of the comic's distributing company, King Features Syndicate. Hoover writes, in part: "I welcome the opportunity to say a word about George McManus. He does not know it, but 'Bringing Up Father' was the reference library and compelling authority of the two small boys who brought me up. Far beyond this service, Mr. McManus' contributions...furnished the star shells of humor which lightened up no-man's land during the two world wars..." Hoover signs in black ink at the conclusion. Very good.
